Mallorys liv er fuldt af dystre minder fra hendes barndom, som hun ikke kan sætte ord på, og hendes værn mod grusomhederne har været tavshed. Kun Rider kunne beskytte hende mod det onde, men han forsvandt, da det var allerværst. Efter år med beskyttende hjemmeundervisning skal Mallory nu starte i high school, og der dukker Rider pludselig op igen.

Mallory kæmper med hendes minder og med at prøve på at blive en del af high school livet, da det er svært at bruge tavshed som et skjold der.

Samtidig er der det komplicerede forhold til Rider og samt hendes forhold til hendes adoptivforældre, som reddede hende.

Det er en lang roman, men det mærkes overhovedet ikke. Man bliver med det samme revet i historien. Med de svære traumer som Mallory har er det meget realistisk, at det ikke er noget det lige kan løses på et par hundrede sider. Personerne er virkelig godt skrevet, og man lever sig ind i Mallorys kampe med at komme videre

En virkelig velskreven bog. Jeg følte virkelig med personerne og flere scener var virkelig rørende. På trods af, at det er en rimelig kort bog, får man virkelig en komplet og kompleks historie om to mænd der finder sammen på trods.
